Politicians do not talk about it, and it is hypocrisy, he believes. According to Ķīlis, the pensions will not be reduced, but they will be affected by taxes. Roberts Ķīlis, chairman of Strategic Analysis Commission, has announced he has been misunderstood in the interview to BBC, when he, according to the British source, said that Latvia will see its pension system collapse by the end of the year. Ķīlis claims that he never said that the government would not be able to cover pension payments; however, he stands by his words that it will be a major shock for people. The second round of innovative business idea competition Peak Time 2010 will be unveiled on August 24 in Riga Technical University. The competition is organized by the Latvia’s Investment and Development Agency together with Riga Technical University, and co-financed by the European Union and the European Regional Development Fund. The national think-tank portal scenariji.lv will offer fitting the parties and their programmes as assessed by the experts. Roberts Ķīlis, chairman of Strategic Analysis Committee, said that the portal will offer tax calculator to show how the proposed tax changes will affect household expenses. The parties are also asked to submit their stance in tax issues, and this will find its way in portal as well. Apart from the political party union Unity, other political forces are critical about the idea to temporarily discard contributions to the second-pillar pension scheme. Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis, professor at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, comments that he consolidation of the budget will be artificial - in two years, returning to 2% contributions, the deficit would grow back. This means it is just postponing the problem. The budget should be consolidated by reducing the existing pensions or find cuts in other spheres.
